Deer and elk have always fascinated me, especially living among them here in the mountains of California. Painting this piece felt deeply personal — less like creating a wildlife portrait and more like capturing a quiet moment of presence and stillness within nature.
This painting was created using the traditional fat over lean oil painting process, moving through drawing, glazing, and finally opaque layers. I especially enjoyed allowing soft atmospheric greens and warm reflected light to gradually build the form from darkness.
The result is a calm woodland portrait filled with subtle light, texture, and quiet observation.
